Both our tonic herb extract powders and grass juice powders are highly hygroscopic due to the nature of single-ingredient dehydrated powders. This means that when they come into contact with moisture or humidity in the environment, they will quickly absorb it from the air, which can cause them to clump and, over time, become a solid mass.
This often happens to extract powders once they have been opened and some time has passed with exposure to humidity in the environment. Clumping will always occur if a small amount of moisture or humidity enters the jar, as we do not add any additives, humectants or anti-caking agents to our powders. We believe pure, single-ingredient products are the best.
We provide silica sachets inside the jar to help absorb additional moisture that may get trapped inside. In most cases, this is sufficient.
Some everyday situations make clumping more likely. For example, boiling a kettle increases the humidity of a room, so opening a jar in that environment and closing it again may trap moisture inside.
What to do if your powder has clumped
Once clumped or solid, the powder is still fine to use in hot water, as it will dissolve easily. As long as there is no sign of any mould, it is perfectly safe to use. Pieces can also be broken away and ground if needed.
Our quality assurance
We take and keep a sample of every single batch of powder we receive for five years, so we are always able to refer back to these to check on how the state of a powder has endured over time.
